Review of the Cyber Boost Session for the Municipality of The Hague – Supply Chain Vulnerability

On October 2, 2023, CCRC organized a successful Cyber Boost Session at the Municipality of The Hague, focusing on increasing the cyber resilience of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The event brought together experts and entrepreneurs to share experiences and knowledge about the growing threat of cyberattacks. For a comprehensive recap and to hear insights from the experts, check out the aftermovie of the Cyber Boost Session below.

"Break-in at my office"

Julie Ann Tollenaar, an independent professional, shared her personal experience with a cyber attack. Her mailbox, which served as her office, was hacked. As a result, she lost access not only to her emails but also to important documents and photos. This profound experience highlighted the need for better cybersecurity, especially for freelancers and small businesses, which are often more vulnerable to such attacks.

The importance of cyber drills/exercises

Eric-Jan de Roode, co-founder of CCRC, explained why cyber exercises are crucial for SMEs. “Large companies in the Netherlands are well protected against cyberattacks due to their larger budgets. However, smaller businesses are more vulnerable and often become targets in what we call supply chain vulnerability. It is incredibly important to be prepared, because it will happen at some point,” said Eric-Jan. He emphasized that the Cyber Boost Sessions prepare entrepreneurs practically for a cyber crisis by simulating realistic scenarios. This helps them avoid facing a crisis for the first time when it actually happens.

The position of the Municipality of The Hague

Saskia Bruines, alderwoman for Finance, Culture, Economic Affairs, and the Scheveningen district, emphasized the importance of cyber resilience for businesses in The Hague. “The city of The Hague considers cyber resilience for businesses to be extremely important, especially for SMEs. It is essential that we support our businesses in defending against cyber threats,” said Saskia.

During the Cyber Boost Session, entrepreneurs were actively involved in exercises that prepared them for potential cyber incidents. This practical approach fostered a better understanding and greater awareness of the dangers, enabling them to be better prepared to take effective measures in the event of a real attack.
